"Sound & Fury," a pseudo-documentary film screened by the Double Take Documentary Film Festival in Durham, North Carolina, just recently, and this past Sunday night in Manhattan's Ron Lauder-controlled Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), which is currently being "reconfigured" into several dozen partitions, failed to interest deeply the more than 40 percent deaf audience who were in attendance.

Presented by the Film Society of Lincoln Center, the director of the "docu-fantasy," Josh Aronson, and the Artinian family [featured in the film], were present at MOMA for a Question & Answers session after the screening. Many questioners were crude PR firm "plants," often so easy to spot that the audience was at times laughing at such shameless transparency.

When, half way through the Q&A, a handsome deaf late twenty-something gentleman asked why the "documentary" featured a family commingled of hearing and non-hearing members -- which was not even obliquely objective in the most rudimentary sense of the word -- he was told to PLEASE BE SEATED and discuss this with the Artinian family on his own free time, AFTER the Q&A, thank you. The eloquence of the deaf man was in clear evidence, for I understood him much more clearly than the director, and his "co-perpetrator," as his production partner called himself in his opening introduction. The deaf questioner, before this rude dismissal, said that his own mother had taught him very well how to speak and be well understood by hearing people. He added that he had no clue, nor insight, into why the documentary film, heavily financed by

PBS, WNET, and CPB

[which are funded by medical device companies & pharmaceuticals/chemicals mega-giants, esp. Pfizer & Corning] in a triumvarate, made such a ONE-SIDED positive portrayal of the bulky brain/bone implant that fills the hole left from the drilling. The director, Josh Aronson, quickly avoided this candid and relevant question and moved onto the next questioner, in this kangaroo court of "fairness, objectivity, and impartiality".

The MOMA theatre "circus" provided only one other questioner during the night's screening who didn't go along with the clumsy (yet propogandistically slick) PBS promotions gag titled "Sound & Fury"

The film droned on and on about a huge conspiracy of deaf people who are hidebound and reactionary and abusive to their 18-month year old deaf babies] because they want to hang on to their

AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE (ASL)**

... as if hanging on to their ASL culture of hand expressions and silence was sinister, even just hanging on yet a WEE BIT longer, and not throw caution to the wind, in opening sizable HOLES in their skulls to welcome the electronics' warehouse implants and the ensuing DIGIT-IZATION schematas stuffed into their brain tissue. It was never brought up in the film how an infant could change his/her own battery every 80 hours, or less, or how a child could really comfortably remove their forbidding cochlear walkie-talkie unit from their skull, for showers or baths. Teenagers with the device implanted will have a very difficult time, it is clearly evident, when "kissing" becomes a school extracurricular activity of the highest order, which includes ear kisses.

The second and only other "disagreeable" questioner, in the very final minutes of the evening, asked WHO manufactured the cochlear implant, HOW MUCH it cost, how much the accompanying SURGERY costs, and ... will UNINSURED deaf Americans be issued a FREE DEVICE, Gratis, since it is SO CRITICALLY NEEDED by all deaf people now, by the "OH- SO-CONCERNED" manufacturer(s), or even by loving and caring PBS/NPR, no longer a truly non-commercial tv/radio joint empire.

The software technician who had been featured in her saintly role in the 80-minute film was also on stage to field questions after the screening. She didn't say how much the implant device will cost the consumer, but she did quickly remark that the SURGERY ALONE would cost a minimum of $35,000. She said also that there were two main manufacturers of the device, but she "couldn't remember well their names." [we here at this cyberzine will look in the film's credits to look for the manufacturers' contribution to production costs, and ask an accounting firm to look into the legal aspects of NOT reporting such contributions -- we already learned from AP Wire on-line service that the DEVICE ALONE costs $40,000, for little more than a glorified Walkman, in that it has a transmitting coil that sends code as radio waves, thus making it as easily received by external auditors as a car radio or a police radio].

Rush Limbaugh had a big hole drilled into his skull and a two way radio implanted against his brain ... he uses SYNTHETIC HEARING now via electrodes embedded into his very own brain cortex tissue ... careful he does not hear police radio calls and mistake them for conversations with God!

Questions have risen about the autoimmune inner ear disease that caused Limbaugh profound deafness between October of 2001 and January of 2002. The radio host subsequently regained hearing through the use of cochlear implants.

Research has shown that the drugs seem to sabotage the workings of the inner ear, causing permanent damage. But the drugs do not appear to affect the cochlear nerve, which brings sound into the brain.

Limbaugh's cochlear implant doctor, Dr. Jennifer Derebery, an otolaryngologist at the House Ear Clinic in Los Angeles, says it is possible that there is a connection between Limbaugh's sudden hearing loss and pill abuse, but she said there is no way to know for sure.

"We don't know why some people, but apparently not most, who take large doses may lose their hearing," Derebery said on ABCNEWS' Good Morning America. "The reason we don't know is that because we ultimately have to have biopsy specimens of the inner ear to tell that."

In June 2002, Rush Limbaugh told his former housekeeper he was going to New York for detox a second time, after coercing her for too long to give him illicit stocks of her husband's prescription pain killers.

After he returned, "I went to talk to him, and he cried a little bit," his housekeeper said. "He told me that if it ever got out, he would be ruined."

She claimed that a lawyer for Limbaugh gave her a payoff - $80,000 he owed her, plus another $120,000 - and asked her to destroy the computer that contained the E-mail records.

Soon after, Cline and her husband retained Shohat and contacted prosecutors.

"Life's not easier with the implant."

"It requires intense therapy and it's not the same as hearing. It's like an electric buzzing." The cochlear implant is a powerful hearing aid that is placed in the inner ear of an individual with nerve deafness. The system includes a processor worn on clothes [like a Walkman, in that it has a transmitting coil that sends code as radio waves, thus making it as easily received by external auditors as a car radio or a police radio] that is linked by a cable to a transmitter worn behind the ear. The transmitter is held in place by a magnet that is drawn to the implant under the skin.

The cochlear implant does not, however, take away a person's deafness.

When the processor is on, the implant stimulates hearing. When it's turned off, the hearing is gone.

Four years after Snoddon was implanted, she turned it off for good.

"I was angry. I couldn't understand why my parents were not proud of me for who I was," she explains.

Two years later, Snoddon developed an infectious mass inside her skull which she attributes to the cochlear implant, despite a variety of medical opinions. In December 1996, she underwent surgery at Toronto General Hospital to remove the implant. She has since immersed herself in "deaf culture" by learning to sign, developing relationships with other deaf people, joining interest groups and becoming actively involved in speaking out against cochlear implants.

Ninety percent of deaf children are born to hearing parents, many of whom have never known a deaf person.

Because hearing parents "can't find a place of acceptance" for their deaf children, they opt for the cochlear implant WITHOUT EXPLORING the possibilities of immersing them in the "deaf culture," signs Gary Malkowski, former MPP and vice-president of the CAD. "They try to fix them," he signs.

CLARION HiFocus Electrode allows direct coupling between a cochlear implant and a patient's auditory nerve. U.S. clinical trials with the system began in August 1999. The primary design objective of the HiFocus Electrode is to provide advanced DIGITAL CODING schemes which deliver maximum sound information at up to 16 sites at the same time.

"Consumers can sue insurers for fraud under a federal racketeering law that provides for triple damages, the Supreme Court ruled yesterday in a unanimous decision.

The court decided that tens of thousands of Nevada residents can invoke the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, designed to combat organized crime, in a lawsuit alleging that HUMANA INC., a health insurer, systematically cheated them out of millions of dollars.

The ruling would allow insurers and regulators to use the same powerful WEAPON to combat fraud against health plans, legal experts said.

[...] The decision means HUMANA beneficiaries can pursue triple damages. Along with interest and legal fees, the stakes could reach $20 million to $30 million in the decade-old case, plaintiffs' attorney Will Kemp said.

[...] Franklin Burt ... called the decision "very bad for the insurance industry".

[...] HUMANA had said use of the law would infringe on states' authority to regulate the insurance industry under the McCarran-Gerguson Act. The court disagreed, saying, "We reject any suggestion that Congress intended to cede the field of insurance regulation to the states, saving only instances in which Congress expressly orders otherwise." "Editors Note: --- GREED AND HIV --- A lot of people are getting rich off HIV. The money is so big that it puts a lot of people and companies in a questionable position ethically and morally. And you can be certain that this lure of easy cash dirties more than a few hands. While many activists draw attention to corporate greed by pointing to the high-price of many drugs (most recently Sustiva --- ACT UP Philadelphia), the root of the problem goes much deeper. The price of a drug is merely a symptom of a much more vast formal and informal network of perks and pay-offs.

Some doctors and some pharmaceutical companies are profiteering from one of the most lucrative illnesses ever to hit humankind

[Cassandra Crossing Editor's note: Zovirax, generic acyclovir, Valtrex, etc., different names for the same drug that suppresses genital herpes, are all criminally profitable too; costing less than a few dollars a pound to manufacture, the price today averages $1.50-$5.50 per 400 mgs, i.e., 1 tablet -- this kind of price fixing is endemic to the marketing strategies of U.S. and now international pharmaceutical concerns -- the generic brands follow suit in maximizing prices as soon as they can!]

Poised to pounce on this pandemic, the global costs of HIV make it one of the largest pharmaceutical "cash cows" in history. For instance, the treatment costs of HIV would exceed the entire GNP (gross national product) of many African and Asian countries if they were to offer the "cocktail" to everyone positive for the virus.

With big money comes temptation --- and not everyone can resist taking a bite out of this apple. Through various informal schemes, some doctors get free trips to exotic places at fancy resorts. You see, pharmaceutical companies have lists that tell them which doctors are prescribing their drugs. All drug companies monitor doctors who push a lot of a particular med are rewarded with a nice vacation; keep in mind that these trips are usually called seminars or workshops, but no one cares if you attend the meetings or not. Much like a "frequent prescriber" club.

[...] ... The pharmaceutical industry is also guilty of blurring ethical lines. While we can be certain that most drug companies engage in questionable activities, in order to gain "market share" for their medicine, one recent example demonstrates the moral depths to which they will descend. On 22 September 1998, INVESTOR?S BUSINESS DAILY accurately predicts the protease trend: "A report indicates that Agouron should take away market share from Merck?s Crixivan because of Viracept?s twice-a-day dosing. Agouron may also benefit from recently announced manufacturing problems at Abbott Laboratories, which makes Norvir." Further, the aggressiveness of Agouron?s tactics are well known in the pharmaceutical industry as reported by the SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE (9/16/98): "Instead of celebrating the drug?s success, Agouron President Peter Johnson has struggled to preserve momentum and to keep Wall Street interested." This prediction did not fall on deaf ears a Agouron.

Even though Agouron?s profits grew 90% during the first quarter (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 10/2198), AND EVEN THOUGH "Viracept is now the most widely prescribed protease inhibitor" (PR NEWSWIRE, 10/20/98), an ethically dubious move was made to capture even more market share by rewarding doctors if they switched their patients from Norvir to Viracept. [...] Agouron would give doctors $1,000 if they switched a patient from Norvir to Viracept.

Scott McCallister, who is a leading HIV specialist in Chicago told POSITIVELY AWARE that "Agouron was quick to react when the problem with Abbott?s Norvir appeared. They came to us and offered a quote-unquote 'trial' using nelfinavir (Viracept). They brought a form with them that first day and offered us a $1,000 dollars a patient to switch them." Dr. McCallister summarizes his reaction to Agouron?s approach: "I think any reasonable physician would question Agouron?s ethics. It is reprehensible to me that they would offer us quote-unquote 'bribe' in order to change drugs."

Agouron?s side of the story is a little different. They angrily responded that such speculations were untrue and that Agouron has worked hard to help the HIV community. In fact, the money given to the doctors was to be used for research and was not a pay-off.

[...] ... From these few examples we see how MONEY corrupts some individuals in the treatment and study of HIV. While Agouron's behavior probably represents more a lapse in ethical judgment than a pattern of practices, such conduct should be brought to light and made public so as to maintain our system of checks and balances with drug companies.
